Personal Statement

Lastly, in this portfolio I have decided to include my Personal Statement that I had to turn in for my law school applications. Almost every school has the same prompt for the personal statement and that is to write something about yourself that the admissions committee wouldn’t know from looking at your transcript and resume... that’s it. Some schools would have an extra question of why are you interested in this particular law school but everyone school has the same basic prompt. With this being such a broad topic, I had no idea where to start. As someone who hasn’t experienced a lot of extreme hardships, I didn’t know what to write. I constantly asked myself how do I standout to these admissions committees and make them say, “Yes, we want her.”
I decided to write about why I want to become a lawyer and why I want to work in family law. I wrote about how my parents divorced when I was young and the different cases that I have worked in the past that led me to want to work in family law. I also wrote about how my past experiences and what I have seen have lit a fire in me to become the best lawyer I can be. When going through so many applications, each applicant ends up being just a name on a sheet of paper so I wanted my personal statement to be a window into my life and I wanted the committee to leave feeling like they knew who I was and who I can be in the future.
